Kellerkind | Music Is a Miracle | Stil Vor Talent Records

Kellerkind Music Is a Miracle

Listen

Over the past couple of years, Kellerkind’s unique interpretation of house music has truly catapulted him out of the figurative basement and into the limelight. Whether it was the disco-infused cool of ‘Backflash’ or the tribal rhythms found on his debut-album ‘Basement Story’, through hard work, rather than by miracle, Marco Biagini matured into a producer who is at the top of his game. With ‘Music is a Miracle’ Kellerkind now delivers a sophomore album that offers itself as a diverse and surprising love letter to music, carrying his distinct handwriting.

On ‘Your Love’, Kellerkind organically eases us into the album as deep bongos float over casual guitar licks and drawn-out synth melodies. Gentle murmurs slowly form into a distant soul vocal while sunny saxophones create a relaxed and beautifully fragile vibe. ‘Don’t You Know It’ then tightens the screws. Here, cowbells and laser-synths scream trademark Kellerkind: sugary without being cheesy, laidback yet never losing sight of the groove. It’s time to warm up the discotheque, don’t you know!? Kellerkind does, as he proves on ‘I Know’ and treats us to filtered disco breaks, colourful chords and a smooth vocal hook.

Things get a little tougher on the next tracks. While ‘Give Me the Beat Back’ utilises a ghetto chant, dubbed out chords and hard-hitting snares to showcase a bouncy, UK-sounding bass-line, ‘Projection’ loops Jake The Rapper’s instantly recognisable voice and a classic disco riff to create seven minutes of moreish fun. ‘Music is a Miracle’, the album’s title-track, then reveals itself as a standout. Here, an extremely funky garage bass-line, Chicago strings and urgent trumpets surprise us as they drop after a Moodyman-esque monologue. Mantra-alert!

Taking a dreamier turn, Kellerkind’s ‘Feel It’ is wonky and mechanical as it builds into a melodic climax that leaves you lost on the dance-floor, suspended in time. A beautiful moment and possible highlight in any DJ set. On ‘It’s Like That’ a dusty dub-house groove then flows through clonking percussion and a pitched down vocal until classicistic chords eventually wash over the arrangement. Drawing us in even deeper, ‘Take This Higher’ combines a bittersweet piano, romantic string melodies and an elegantly repeated vocal hook, toughened up by a low-slung house bass.

Kellerkind reveals a completely new facet on the electronic ballad ‘Monologue’, which features Laura Wiesmann’s soulful vox. This is tasteful pop that bedazzles due to its reduced nature, honest vulnerability and musical softness. Lastly, the field recordings of an airplane security brief form the base for heavy piano notes, a distant beat and knackered strings on the nostalgic yet hopeful outro ‘Itchy Feet’. The title couldn’t be more fitting: Kellerkind doesn’t like to stand still, something he certainly proves with ‘Music is a Miracle’!

Cuthead | Everlasting Sunday | Uncanny Valley

Cuthead Everlasting Sunday

Listen

There we go again. Finally, Cuthead returns with the long awaited follow-up to his “Brother EP”. His new record “Everlasting Sunday” surely fulfils some dreams as it is packed with no less than nine tracks. Three catchy House tunes on the A-Side and six Hip-Hop-jams on the B-side make for a very extended EP or a mini-album … the choice is up to you!

Right at the beginning we start with the sample-heavy “Maputo Jam”, a tune in classical Cuthead-manner with its irresistible drumming full of stumbling blocks and layers of sweet synth-melodies. “Nautic Walking” is a straighter House track with a guitar line and clapping samples but that bass line quickly reminds you whom you’re listening to. “Minerals” starts off pretty deeply before evolving from a jazzy House affair into an almost orchestral tune with opulent strings.

The flipside is an extensive expression of Cuthead’s inexhaustible love for Hip-Hop. There is feel-good material like “Everlasting Sunday” and “Deep Shadows” as well as banging joints like “Calculator Watch” with all the typical Cuthead-trademarks: sick bass work, stammering drumming and imaginative sampling.

Just A Mood | Sunday Morning Question | Trapez LTD

Just A Mood Sunday Morning Question

Listen

Just A Mood are Pietro Genuino and Alberto Viotti, two young producers from Turin.
They have their own event called “TrustMe” which hosted artists such as Derrick Carter, Kyle Hall, Motor City Drum Ensemble and more. For Trapez ltd they have written three dramatic tales with the machine driven funk of motor city techno combined with the introspective melancholic soul of early and raw Chicago & Detroit techno/house, for us a combination that continually proves irresistible.

Just A Mood open up their EP with the track “Sunday”. An uncooked piece of music which directly from the start formulates their fascination for simplicity in composition and its sexiness. We don’t know if Just A Mood have taken influences from icons such as Daniel Bell or Baby Ford but their down to earth appeal rooted in funky drum patters directly puts them close to these producers. There is a slight & beautiful “cosmic feeling” when manipulated vocals hover in and out over their hypnotic beats which gives the tracks the extra bit they need to breathe.

Their follow up track “Morning” picks up on beat driven funkiness but introduces levels of noise and FX sounds to create a stronger psychedelic form of deepness.
The track starts sort of harsh but makes its way into a hypnotic groove through Just A Mood’s sensitiveness and knowledge for deeper music.

They close their EP with “Question”, a fine deep track that lives by on its bongo beat of programmed rhythm, keeping a low profile which in the course of the track proves to capture a intense spiritual feeling.

Coyu | D Change | Cocoon Recordings

Coyu D Change

Listen

Cocoon latest artist signing Coyu is back on the track with his second Cocoon Recordings release. And he strikes back louder and heavier than ever before! For quite some time Coyu focused mainly on the deeper sides of house and techno, especially with his own label „Suara“. However his new Cocoon Release „I Want Your Jack“ is a stunning example for kicking and strong techno at its best and proofs these sounds are not only made in Sweden these days. „I Want Your Jack“ is pure energy and a dignified successor to Len Faki‘s remix of „Stranger To Stability“ by Dustin Zahn. A must play for the end of this years techno season.

Track number two „D-Change“ is a co-production with Chicago house legend K-Alexi. This man breathes the word „jack“ and he strongly influenced the techno-movements in cities like Berlin or Frankfurt. His productions added the right sound to clubs like the „Tresor“ or the „Omen“ in the early 90s and his colab with Coyu strongly refers to these times. „D-Change“ beams the high days of Underground Resistance and Industrial Strength into the year 2013. The message is clear and pure madness is called out on techno-floors with this one. We especially like the legendary „Are You Ready?“ vocal here, a famous whoop by Cocoon master Sven Väth back in the days.

„Octagon“ is the third track in this package however this is all but no bonus track. This is another proper techno-monster and Coyu added some cool house-elements here. Tribal beats and vague vocal samples shimmering in the backround make us want to dance around a tribal bonfire at night. „Octagon“ is a universal weapon for techno- and house-fans that will shake up dancefloors. This one is for the dancers and not for the rubbernecks!
